4 Creative Websites Built Using DIY Site Makers

Posted: 08 Dec 2013 09:00 PM PST

We have been taught nothing is free, so it's no accident that many of us treat free (or nearly free) software with suspicion. But what if it is good or even the best solution for your unique case?

How to know for sure you're not losing your chance to save some money and get a high quality product or service?

One of the first things that spring to my mind is checking the provider's reputation by reading customers' testimonials. This is in fact what I regularly do as a blogger when reviewing another online website builder. So, I often come across many successful, functioning websites built using DIY site makers, and some of them are truly amazing!

So, in this post I'd like to showcase several creative websites running on DIY platforms. I don't know their owners, and I'm not promoting these sites – they are all taken from the official 'Featured' pages. What I'm trying to say is that website builders can do magic if you show creativity and inventiveness.

Excelworld.ru

You can easily confuse this website with an open Excel Book or a Google Spreadsheet – the website's design resembles the interface of the MS Excel: the menu, the icons and other elements are all made in the tradition of the program. The website is in Russian and has a corresponding extension (.ru). I believe that design is that kind of language that needs no translation :) – see the screenshot below.

Creative Websites

About the platform: This website is running on uCoz website builder (those who doubt can check the footer). The main advantages of uCoz over its competitors are: user management, full code control, numerous widgets, multi language support.

Pricing: The service has a free version and 5 paid packages ($3.09 – $10.99/mo).

SagiGolan.com

This website doesn't feature any unusual, interactive user experiences, but it's definitely worth your attention, especially if you like minimalist trends in web design. It belongs to a young architect and urban designer. Actually, it's a beautifully made ‘virtual business card’: its target is to display the owners' works, bio and contacts.

Creative Websites

About the platform: This online portfolio is powered by IMCreator, an all-in-one web-based website builder. Its strongest side is the templates collection, to my mind. Works well for designers, photographers and other creative individuals.

Pricing: There are three types of accounts: Free, Premium ($5.95 – $9.95/mo) and Pro (for professionals and resellers).

StellaAndLori.com

This website is featured on Webydo website builder (they have a separate 'Design Spotlight' page showcasing their customers' works. StellaAndLori is a playful, fascinating website. It has many interactive, hand-drawn elements that are in themselves award-worthy. I enjoyed browsing this chic website. The owners do have a knack for design :) .

Creative Websites

About the platform: Webydo is advertised as a professional, web-based studio. It offers unmatched collaboration solutions ('Share My Design' and 'Add a Contributor' options) and also allows designers to rebrand the system (place their own logos).

Pricing: It's free until you decide to add a custom domain to your website ($7.90 – $9.90/month).

LesaPhotoGraphy.com

This effects-rich, Flash website is based on a template offered by MotoCMS website builder. This photography portfolio uses Flash at its finest: the sinusoidal 3D gallery is mesmerizing.

Creative Websites

About the platform: MotoCMS is a WYSIWYG website builder offering HTML/Flash templates which are in fact almost ready sites. All you need is to pick one and download it to the server. Once the template is installed it can be edited using inbuilt drag-and-drop tools.

Pricing: MotoCMS templates come at $139. With the purchase you get a license, the template itself, lifetime updates and support. No recurring fees (except for your hosting).
