Google certified Cyanogen Mod Oppo N1 shipping on Christmas Eve

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 10:35 AM PST

Oppo N1 is the first Cyanogen Mod phone to have been approved by Google's strict CTS, for compliance to Android compatibility and of course, inclusion of Google Play on this limited edition device. The Oppo N1 Cyanogen Mod Edition was announced as "coming in December" but never really got solid dates owing to the obvious roadblocks, but thanks to this recent development, Oppo has revealed that the device is shipping on Christmas Eve i.e December 24th of this year. This marks the first time in history that a popular third party AOSP ROM based phone is Google certified and is shown the green light. Cyanogen Mod's Koushik Dutta happened to be relieved about the announcement, as his G+ post read - Google just approved our first CyanogenMod  phone Man, the last 24 hours has been a total rollercoaster of emotions, and it isn't letting up it seems. Roller coaster ride indeed, because only this morning Google kicked out the super useful ROM Manager app out of the Play Store. No surprises as to who the developer is, behind that app. Google also passively kicked out the Cyanogen Mod installer out of the Play Store, citing various reasons. Amidst all this, it must be ...

Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 likely to launch in India on December 23rd

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 06:56 AM PST

Samsung has sent us an invite for a smartphone launch on Monday, December 23rd, 2013. The invite just says "New GALAXY Smartphone Launch" without giving any hint about the smartphone. Since there are no new smartphones for Samsung to launch in India and it had already released the new Galaxy S Duos 2, it is likely to launch the Grand 2 next week. The Galaxy Grand that was launched earlier this year was one of the popular mid-range smartphone in this year. The Grand 2 with better display, faster processor more RAM and a larger battery would definitely attract more customers in the mid-range segment. The Galaxy Grand 2 was announced last month and packs a 5.25-inch (1280 x 720 Pixels) capacitive touch screen display, powered by a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor and runs on Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean). It has a 8-megapixel auto focus camera with LED flash and a 1.9-megapixel HD front-facing camera. It comes with dual-SIM capabilities, packs 1.5GB RAM and a 2,600 mAh battery. Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 specifications 5.25-inch (1280 x 720 Pixels) capacitive touch screen display with 16:9 aspect ratio 1.2 GHz quad-core processor Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) OS Dual SIM 8.9 mm thick and weighs 163 grams 8MP Auto Focus Camera ...

Geeksphone Revolution with Intel Atom Z2560 CPU and multi-OS support coming in Q1 2014

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 06:38 AM PST

Spanish handset maker Geeksphone has finally revealed the specifications of their upcoming high-end smartphone called Revolution. It would feature a 4.7-inch (960 x 540 pixels) capacitive touch screen IPS display, powered by a 1.6 GHz dual-core  Intel Atom Z2560 processor with PowerVR SGX544 GPU and Hyper-Threading technology. Last month the company posted a video showing the performance of an Intel Atom-powered developer device compared with a Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered device, both running on Firefox OS. This would not be based on Firefox OS since it is not a Mozilla partner, but it would run on Mozilla Open Web technology Boot2Geck, which would have similar features and have access to Firefox OS marketplace. The smartphone would also have an option to switch to Android OS without losing your warranty, just like Oppo N1, which would come with an option to switch to CyanogenMod ROM from the default Color ROM. It would feature a 8-megapixel rear camera, expandable storage and a 2000 mAh battery. No word on front-facing camera, RAM or internal memory yet. It is likely to come with 3G support. The Spanish company released Firefox OS developer preview phones, Keon and Peak earlier this year, which saw limited release, so we can't expect this to roll out globally. The Geeksphone Peak ...

Jolla phone goes on sale in Europe, priced at €399

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 05:26 AM PST

The Finnish upstart, Jolla, has just hit another milestone and is now available for purchase in Europe. Running on the Sailfish operating system, the phone has a very interesting user interface derived from the remains of the erstwhile MeeGo project. The phone is already on sale in Finland and has been shipping to users for a few days now. Jolla's self named phone has fairly mid range specifications but that doesn't hold it back as the hardware and software are very well optimized for each other. The screen is a 4.5 inch display with a resolution of 540x960 pixels. Powering it is a 1.4Ghz dual core Snapdragon 400 processor paired with 1GB of RAM. The camera module is 8MP alongside a 2MP front facing unit. Users get 16GB of built in storage. Apart from the operating system, the device also has a back plate component called the 'Other Half' that can be swapped out for ones with more capabilities. We've already seen people hack in wireless charging capabilities and the IO port ensures that options are limited only by your imagination. Keyboards and eInk back panels are very much a possibility. Jolla plans to make Sailfish OS open source and it brings ...

Foursquare for Android updated with redesigned UI and faster performance

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 04:57 AM PST

Foursquare for Android has been updated (v2013-12-19) with a completely new user interface that is more flatter, similar to iOS 7. Foursquare for iPhone got updated with redesigned iOS 7 look earlier this month that also added new features, but the new Android update doesn't add any new features. The official changelog just says, "All new lighter and faster version". We noticed a new Foursquare icon, a new Side bar with a circular profile picture, redesigned in-app icons and fonts, new icons for search, notifications and map view on the top and a new check-in icon on the bottom. On the top there is a free space that would show interesting things happening nearby. The home page now shows only things that are happening nearby, so you have to manually turn on the worldwide box to see what's happening worldwide. Have you updated the Foursquare app for Android? Do you like the new look? Let us know in the comments below. Download Foursquare (Free) - Android

500px Official app comes to Windows Phone

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 04:23 AM PST

The Windows Phone App store is finally catching up with iOS and Android apps, recently we saw Instagram come to Windows Phone followed by the popular game, Subway Surfers. The next app to join the Windows Phone store, which now boasts more than 200,000 apps is the official app of 500px. 500px is easily one of the most popular photography social networks and there were numerous third party applications on the Windows Phone store but not the official app. That hole has been plugged as 500px have finally launched a Windows Phone application.   Unlike the iOS or Android version, you cannot directly upload pictures to your collection right from the app which is kind of disappointing. All you can do is that you can check out various photos that are there in the site. You can view photos, comment on them or share the photos and by tapping the image, you can view details of the photo including EXIF data. You can also set a live tile that display's various pictures and you can configure your lockscreen to show images from the 500px app. The app is great and the official feature list is as follows Stay up to date on your friends' ...

Nokia Lumia 525 Hands On

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 03:00 AM PST

Nokia announced the Lumia 525 sometime back last month and basically, it was a Lumia 520 with a very slightly different design and 1 GB of RAM. The Lumia 525 is primarily for addressing the low RAM issue on Windows Phones. Phones with 512 MB of RAM, like the Lumia 520, were not allowed to download some apps and games from the Windows Phone Store because of them demanding more resources. This was partly solved with more optimizations from the developers' side, but we still see a lot of new apps and games releasing with the limitation, so Nokia simply went the other way and updated the 520 with 1 GB of RAM, and that's exactly the reason why 525 exists. It was revealed at an event in Goa today that the Lumia 525 will be arriving to India during the first week of January 2014. The Lumia 520 is already the best selling Windows Phone in India and we hope the 525 directly replaces it. That said, we went hands on with the Lumia 525 at the Annual Strategy Sharing Summit in Goa, you can find our impressions below. httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aA-oY6Hp5Zs As we mentioned earlier, the Lumia 525 is basically a 520 ...

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Game Edition with bundled GamePad controller revealed

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 01:48 AM PST

Earlier this week Samsung unveiled the Smartphone Gamepad, a gaming controller for smartphones to improve the gaming experience. Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Game Edition with GamePad bundle has been outed by a German website, AllaboutSamsung.de, who got hands-on the retail box. Even though Samsung announced that the GamePad has been optimized only for Android 4.3 devices like Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, Note 2 and Note 3, the Galaxy Tab 3 Game Edition is likely come with Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) out of the box. The Galaxy Tab 3 Game Edition would have similar specifications of the Galaxy Tab 3 8-inch WiFi tablet . Since the GamePad dock has been designed only for phones with screen size ranging between 4 and 6.3 inches, it will not fit the tablet. The tablet connects to the GamePad over Bluetooth and also comes with an HDMI adapter in the box so that you can connect it to a TV. We already know that Samsung Smartphone GamePad is priced at 79.99 GBP (Rs. 8,140 approx), but pricing for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Game Edition is not available.

Xolo A600 Review

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 01:30 AM PST

Budget Android smartphones with dual SIM capabilities never seem to stop coming and today we have another budget Android smartphone from another Indian manufacturer. Xolo A600 is a budget Android smartphone that is currently priced around Rs. 7,100 and comes with a decent display, a dual-core processor and a 5MP back on its back. Is it worth buying? Lets find out. Design, Build and Handling The build and design of the Xolo A600 contradict its pricing and the budget category that it belongs to. The build feels quite premium and the choice of materials used is quite interesting for a phone at this price. The design language is however, nothing much different. On the front, we have a glass slab that has the display beneath it and on the sides and back, we have a matte finish material which gives the device great gripping. The top and bottom part of the phone have a chrome finish material enhancing the premium look. On the front, we have the 4.5inch display which occupies most of the real estate. Above the display, we have the Xolo logo above which we have the earpiece. Towards the left of the earpiece, we have the proximity and ambient sensor ...

Whatsapp crosses 400 million Monthly Active Users, 1/4th added in 4 months

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 12:36 AM PST

It's always fascinating to see the growth of a communications platform. The mobile phone grew worldwide thanks to a company called Nokia that connected people with calls and SMS as the medium, but in this age of apps and Smartphones, it's Whatsapp that's doing all the connecting. We have been watching its explosive growth over the course of two years, and it has been really interesting. Today, the company's blog has announced that the service has crossed a whopping 400 million monthly active users, with almost a quarter of them - 100 million added in the last four months. This is seen as a huge growth for a space, in which there is suddenly a lot of competition, with some of them even willing to shell out big bucks for TV promotions and so on. However, it remains to be seen if people embrace choice or go for ubiquity. Today, we're proud to announce that because of you, WhatsApp has reached a milestone that no other mobile messaging service has achieved: 400 million monthly active users, with 100 million active users added in the last four months alone. This isn't a count of people who just registered for WhatsApp – it's ...

Nokia Lumia 1520 Camera Samples

Posted: 19 Dec 2013 11:43 PM PST

At the Abu Dhabi event earlier this year, Nokia announced their first phablet - Nokia Lumia 1520. The Nokia Lumia 1520 is the first in various aspects - first Windows Phone phablet, first Windows Phone to sport a Full HD 1080p display and the first Windows Phone device to run on a Snapdragon 800 SoC. The specialty about the Lumia 1520 is that it retains the goodness of a PureView camera from the Nokia Lumia 1020. Though it doesn't have the huge 41MP sensor like the one on Lumia 1020 or Nokia 808, it comes with a little modest 20MP PureView camera that comes with a similar over-sampling algorithm. Nokia Lumia 1020 is currently being hailed as the king of smartphone cameras and while the Lumia 1520 may not threaten the place of Lumia 1020, it will definitely give it a run for the money with the extra features that it offers. Despite packing a smaller sensor, the new software optimizations for camera that have come in Nokia Lumia Black update seem to improve the quality of images. We have the Nokia Lumia 1520 with us and we took its camera for a run in the neighborhood to see how good ...

Posted: 19 Dec 2013 10:32 PM PST

While Nokia announced the Lumia 1520 in India earlier this week, all eyes are set on its lower priced sibling ie the Lumia 1320. The handset couples a 6 inch display with more mid range specifications and aims to compete at a price point dominated by Android phablets. There's no doubt that phablets are not just a fad but have become a legitimate category of products for people who desire a crossover between a phone and a tablet. With the 1320, Nokia aims to get a foothold in this market. The specifications of the product include: 6-inch (1280 x 720 pixels) HD LCD IPS Super sensitive display and Gorilla Glass 3 protection 1.7 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400processor Windows Phone 8 OS 5MP Auto Focus camera with LED flash, 1080p HD recording at 30 fps VGA front-facing camera Dimensions - 164.25 x 85.9 x 9.79 mm  Weight - 220 grams 1GB RAM, 8GB internal memory, micro SD card support up to 64GB 3.5mm audio jack, FM Radio, HD Voice, HAAC mic 4G LTE/ 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 + LE, GPS / aGPS, NFC 3400 mAh (integrated) The international pricing for the handset is $339 and we're expecting a sub Rs. 25,000 pricing for India as well which would make it quite an interesting product. ...
