I like Samsung’s stuff. The messaging in their ads, well, I guess it’s a matter of choice.

Of course, if you find a girl who is impressed with stalking via technology and thinks it’s ‘cool’ then I guess this is the way to go.

What’s your take?

Study: Over Half of Web Traffic is Fraudulent

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 06:10 AM PST

Not exactly the good tidings of the season that Internet marketers want to hear but if you are surprised by this number then you may not truly understand the Internet.

A recent study from Solve Media puts Q3 web traffic in the US at a 51% fraudulent rate.

This quote from the CEO of Solve sets a pretty high bar for marketers that only those with deep pockets may be able to hit.

"As fraudulent web traffic in the US rises, marketers must defend their hard-fought budgets by investing with publishers that ensure their branding is being seen by actual people who can truly complete purchases," said Ari Jacoby, CEO of Solve Media. "With a verified audience, comes the guarantee that brand marketing will be effective online. As the market size of global display spending swells to $48.2B in 2014*, it's a clear win for both publishers and advertisers to ensure audiences are human. To that end, we will see a rapid increase in investments made to protect audience integrity, as advertisers demand secure, verified engagements."

Bad traffic is a problem for everyone. As spammers get more savvy the rate of the bad traffic will increase as long as there is a way to monetize it.

What are you doing in 2014 to ensure your web traffic is pristine?

It Ain’t Over Until It’s Over: Custora Tracks the Last Minute Rush

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 01:50 PM PST

toyrus 24 hour“Toys R Us announced this week that its stores will remain open for 87 straight hours leading up to Christmas. Not to be outdone, the internet announced that it will be open all the time always forever.”

– Seth Meyers, SNL Weekend Update

When I heard that joke on this week’s Saturday Night Live episode, I laughed out loud. Then I realized how true it is. The internet has always been the place where you go shopping in your pajamas at 3 am. Sure, you could go to the 24 hour CVS but they don’t have the depth of selection.

Not only is the internet always open but it’s retailers are delivering goods faster than ever. From overnight deliveries to 1 hour local service, to instant downloads.

In order to keep track of the virtual hustle and bustle, Custora Pulse has build a real-time dashboard that compares holiday sales 2013 to 2012. Right now, they’re clocking the ecommerce last minute rush up to Santa’s big day. Things are finally settling down but they were booming well into the weekend.

Here’s what they’ve discovered so far:

Custora Pulse data shows strong growth during the last-minute shopping rush (Dec-15-18), with sales growing 13% over the same period in 2012.

Online traffic was especially strong during the last-minute rush, with 23% growth in visitors to online stores vs 2012.

One in three purchases was made on a mobile device (phone or tablet) during the last-minute shopping rush.

Looking at the entire period, we see a boost in Black Friday ecommerce conversions, a small boost on CyberMonday and a slight decline of the last-minute rush. I’m assuming the early drop off is because of the shortened holiday shopping season this year. And it’s not over yet. There are still retailers offering to get you your gifts by Christmas if you order today before closing. That’s dedication.

Are you still in the middle of the holiday rush or are you settled in for a long winter’s nap?

Are Tablets Taking Over? In a Word: Yes

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 12:59 PM PST

I love my iPad but would I ever get rid of my PC? Not me. But I’m not really the best test case since I work online for a living. Let’s ask Mr. and Mrs. Average Public.

“Would you consider purchasing a tablet as a replacement for your personal laptop or desktop computer?”

adroit table survey 1Looks like the table(t)s are turning!

The cute pic and the information comes from Adroit Digital’s latest report which is appropriately titled “2014: Are Tablets Taking Over?”

Not only are people turning to their tablets on a more frequent basis, 43% say they have two or more tablets at home. 17% have more than 3. A year ago, I would have been surprised by that number but now that my son realized he could watch Game of Thrones on my iPad I’ve begun to think about becoming a two tablet home.

Let’s talk about leaving home – 94% of respondents said they’ve taken their tablet out of the house but only a small percentage do it on a regular basis. This is likely due to the size and weight of most tablets. Now that we have iPad Air and a variety of 7 inch tablets, that percentage is going to rise.

adroit table survey 2What does all of this have to do with marketing? Plenty. 56% of respondents said they were more likely to respond to an ad on a tablet than an ad on the PC.

Men and adults 25-34 were voted most likely to respond to a tablet ad but it’s women who spend the most tablet time – 2 hours or more every day.

Even better, Adroit’s study shows that tablet ads are great for impulse buys. Almost half of the respondents said they’d be more likely to make an unplanned purchase while using their tablets. This was particularly true of men.

Part of the reason for the easy sway has to be that people turn to their tablets for information and entertainment. They’re bored, so they watch a movie or download an ebook or a game.

50% said they use their tablet to look up information and 49% said they use it specifically to do product research. Easy to see how both of those could lead to shopping.

The important takeaway here is that a tablet isn’t just a mini-laptop. A flat banner ad isn’t going to cut it on a tablet. You need to think in terms of interactivity, of sound and movement. Whatever you can do (and afford) that gets a customer closer to experiencing your product, the better chance you’ll have of clinching the sale.

Remember, tablets are laid back mode. They’re relaxed and easy and exploratory so take your customers on a journey that ends at the checkout counter.
