Facebook a Distant Second to Google in Digital Ad Revenue Share Posted: 20 Dec 2013 05:06 AM PST The eMarketer title to their article talking about the major players in the digital space reads “Mobile Growth Pushes Facebook to Become No. 2 US Digital Ad Seller”. Now to read that headline one might think that there might be some competition to Google, much like those pesky claims that Bingahoo is making strides agains the Goog in search. Well, if a picture is worth a thousand words that would be about 994 too many describe the reality of the ‘competition’. All one needs to say “It’s Google by a country mile”. While there is a prediction of the gap being closed a little but by 2015 it’s still not even a contest. The same can be said for the precious mobile market. Google still has the lead by a wide margin. The bottom line is that Google is going to be very tough to beat. In fact, if one wants to be pessimistic it might be best to just call it a no contest. Because really it isn’t. Do you think these predictions are in line with what you see as the reality of the digital ad space in the next few years? |
Target Update: It’s Bad ……. Real Bad Posted: 20 Dec 2013 04:25 AM PST We reported the other day about the potential damage to Target’s reputation if the data breach that, at the time, was relatively unquantified got big. Well, guess what? It’s real big. So big that post is serving more as a public service announcement by pointing you to an article on Mashable which examines the depth of the issue and the concern shoppers should have.
Long story short, if you have shopped at Target between Black Friday and December 15th you should be on the lookout. Also, you can call target and I am sure they would love to hear from you!
For a retailer it doesn’t get much worse than this. How do you feel about shopping these days? Do you wonder that when you swipe that card if it will go somewhere it shouldn’t. Maybe cash will make a comeback and old fashioned muggings and robberies will come back into vogue. Ahhh, tis the season! Join the Marketing Pilgrim Facebook Community |
Beer-Candied Bacon and Bowties Make the Pinterest Top Pins of 2013 List Posted: 19 Dec 2013 12:34 PM PST We continue our list of the Best of 2013 lists with Pinterest. The all images, all the time social site built out a board called “Top Pins of 2013.” They don’t explain the reason behind the choices other than to say that these were the “pinner favorites.” From a marketing standpoint, it’s good to know what’s catching the public eye, so let’s dive into the results. Food always does well on Pinterest, the crazier the better. Top pins included Taco cupcakes, churro waffles, and beer-candied bacon. Food images also turned up on party and travel boards. Remember, you don’t have to sell food products to post food pictures for example, if you sell DVDs, you can build a board with images of movie snacks. Fashion is another attention getter on Pinterest. Here, it’s all about what’s trendy and occasionally what’s kooky. – Tulle, boho, tartan, and collars in Women's Fashion —Bowties, colored pants, and hipster haircuts in Men's Fashion Undoubtedly, it was the Doctor Who crowd who kept the bowtie boards in business. Unlike food, fashion isn’t as easy to push if it’s not your business. The exception would be brands that relate to a specific activity for example a bicycle company could post a board of biking attire, a travel company could post fashions from vacation destinations. Home Decor is a huge category on Pinterest and the popular photos are usually aspirational or imaginative. People love photos of unusual spaces like this bookcase tucked into a narrow stairwell. And this year grey on grey was a big theme. DIY rules on Pinterest. You can learn how to make your own laundry detergent, reorganize your kitchen with cute labels or build a sliding sandpit for your kids. This category is big on collage photos that deliver a lot of information in one frame. These are time consuming to make but they help you cast a wider net. You’ll also find long images that show you how to create an item step-by-step. Not one of my favorite concepts but you’ll see a lot of them on Pinterest, so they must be working. Lest you think that Pinterest is all flowers and fashion, here are a few manly pins from 2013: —The real Django, Tuskegee Air Women, and a Japanese female warrior in History —Refurbed bikes, souped-up trucks, and The Chevy Stingray in Cars & Motorcycles —Treadmill plans, medicine balls and yoga poses to detox in Health & Fitness —3D printers, wearables and motion sensors in Technology Are you using Pinterest for your business? (If not, why not?) How’s it going for you? Any tips you’d like to share?

App Marketers: You Can Now Add Video to Your Facebook App Center Page Posted: 19 Dec 2013 11:53 AM PST To download or not to download? That is the question consumers ask when they see a new app or game. Even if the download is free, no one wants to waste their time with a poorly made or boring game. Written text is fine but screen shots are usually the ingredient that pushes them one way or the other. But what’s better than a screenshot? How about a video that shows the app in action? Facebook just gave app developers the ability to place a video trailer above the fold on their app’s page. Just like video ads in the newsfeed, app center videos will begin to play as soon as someone hits the page. The sound will be muted until the person clicks the video which is actually a little confusing. I can see consumers everywhere switching their headphones on and off wondering why they can’t hear anything. Videos can be added through the developer app dashboard but must be approved by Facebook before going live. There are a few rules but they’re reasonable:
Some of the sample videos do include marketing statements such as “2013 Best Fishing Game of the Year.” Here’s one for Marvel: Avengers Alliance. Here’s the trailer for the insanely popular Candy Crush Saga. I’ve been avoiding that game but the trailer does make it look fun and inviting. If you have an international audience, you can upload customized trailers that will load based on the users chosen location. A very nice feature. After looking at a few pages with trailers, I clicked on one without and wow – what a difference. Screenshots just don’t pull you in the way a video does. It’s bright, colorful, dynamic and . . . done right. . .it makes you feel like you’re playing the game right now. If it’s a great game (or app), you’ll want to continue playing with the video is over. Just a short slide of the mouse and the app is yours. Nice move, Facebook. Six gem stones and a bonus upgrade to you. |
