| Pope Francis and the Royal Baby Top Facebook’s Most Talked About Charts Posted: 13 Dec 2013 01:53 PM PST We continue our year in review. . . review. . .with Facebook’s 2013 Year in Review. The social media network scanned the personal pages of everyone who uses the site across the globe, grabbed all the common denominators then ordered the data into several top trends lists. Let’s start with the top ten topics that had the whole world talking – or should I say typing? The Pope was one of five people who made the top ten. He joined Margaret Thatcher, Nelson Mandela, the Royal Baby and, incredibly, Miley Cyrus. Imagine that dinner party. Election landed in the number two spot because Facebook counted the word in every language. If you want to see what ranked in specific countries you’ll find that here. Looking at just the US: Most Talked About Topics in the U.S. Another interesting mix. Glad to see only a sprinkling of celebrity madness mixed in with newsworthy topics. Now let’s break it down by topic: Most Talked About By Topic in the U.S. I’m surprised to see Scandal as the most talked about TV show. I would have bet on Doctor Who, but maybe that’s just the circle I run in. I’m also a little disconcerted by the Duck Commander book making the list. Perhaps it’s a true literary masterpiece. I guess I should read it before assuming it’s not. The list of check-ins assures us the Americans just wanna have fun. Disney properties took two of the top three slots. Five properties represent sporting events, six if you count gambling as a sport. Top Check-Ins in the U.S. Disney also did well with the global check-ins: Argentina: Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires On a more personal level, we have the list of top life events noted on Facebook: 1. Added a relationship, got engaged or got married Got a piercing? How did “got a tattoo” not make the list? If you’d like to see your own personal year in review, you can do that just by clicking here. I hope it brings back plenty of fond memories.

| Live From Your Computer! It’s YouTube Events! Posted: 13 Dec 2013 12:11 PM PST
Right now you’re probably saying to yourself. . . wait. . I thought YouTube already had live events. And you’d be correct-ish. In the past, YouTube allowed favored channel owners to run live events. Many of these were tied to big concerts, video game releases and sports. You could also host a live event on Google Hangouts which would automatically show up on YouTube.
I clicked through to the Live Events page and found a huge button asking if I wanted to enable Live Events. I clicked it and that that was that. I’m open to live stream. I didn’t test the tool but I poked around and it looks pretty simple. If you’re beyond simple, there are options to use your own encoding program and customizations. You can add multiple camera feeds and insert mid-roll ads to monetize your event. Nifty. If you’re new at this, YouTube has put together a handbook that walks you through everything you need to do and think about before, during and after the broadcast. Even if you’re not going live, they provide a lot of helpful information on how to optimize your titles, tags, and thumbnails and more. My advice; don’t shoot for the moon. Live events are an excellent way to get one-on-one with your audience. Run a live demo or a tutorial. Encourage your followers to ask questions. Be yourself and don’t even think about getting fancy. Some of my favorite live events are all about one person teaching me how to do something I didn’t know how to do. What would you do if you were going live in five?
