Pope Francis and the Royal Baby Top Facebook’s Most Talked About Charts

Posted: 13 Dec 2013 01:53 PM PST

We continue our year in review. . . review. . .with Facebook’s 2013 Year in Review. The social media network scanned the personal pages of everyone who uses the site across the globe, grabbed all the common denominators then ordered the data into several top trends lists.

Let’s start with the top ten topics that had the whole world talking – or should I say typing?

Facebook 2013 Top Trends

The Pope was one of five people who made the top ten. He joined Margaret Thatcher, Nelson Mandela, the Royal Baby and, incredibly, Miley Cyrus. Imagine that dinner party.

Election landed in the number two spot because Facebook counted the word in every language. If you want to see what ranked in specific countries you’ll find that here.

Looking at just the US:

Most Talked About Topics in the U.S.
1. Super Bowl
2. Government Shutdown
3. Boston Marathon
4. Syria Crisis
5. Harlem Shake
6. Pope Francis
7. George Zimmerman
8. Royal Baby
9. Nelson Mandela
10. Presidential Inauguration
11. NBA Finals
12. Kim Kardashian
13. Miley Cyrus
14. James Gandolfini
15. Meteor Sighting

Another interesting mix. Glad to see only a sprinkling of celebrity madness mixed in with newsworthy topics.

Now let’s break it down by topic:

Most Talked About By Topic in the U.S.
Sports – Super Bowl
Movies – The Conjuring
TV Shows – Scandal
Music – Get Lucky by Daft Punk*
Books – “Happy, Happy, Happy: My Life and Legacy as the Duck Commander” by Phil Robertson
Games – Criminal Case by Pretty Simple Games
Public Figures – Peyton Manning
Politics – Government Shutdown
Technology – Instagram
Viral Moments – Harlem Shake
Internet Memes – Giraffe
*Most Played on Facebook via Spotify

I’m surprised to see Scandal as the most talked about TV show. I would have bet on Doctor Who, but maybe that’s just the circle I run in. I’m also a little disconcerted by the Duck Commander book making the list. Perhaps it’s a true literary masterpiece. I guess I should read it before assuming it’s not.

The list of check-ins assures us the Americans just wanna have fun. Disney properties took two of the top three slots. Five properties represent sporting events, six if you count gambling as a sport.

Top Check-Ins in the U.S.
1. Disneyland & Disney California Adventure (Anaheim, CA)
2. Times Square (New York, NY)
3. Epcot – Walt Disney World (Lake Buena Vista, FL)
4. Dodger Stadium (Los Angeles, CA)
5. AT&T Park (San Francisco, CA)
6. Rangers Ballpark (Arlington, TX)
7. Universal Studios Hollywood (Universal City, CA)
8. Fenway Park (Boston, MA)
9. MGM Grand Hotel & Casino (Las Vegas, NV)
10. Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo (Houston, TX)

Disney also did well with the global check-ins:

Australia: Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), East Melbourne, Victoria
Brazil: Parque Ibirapuera, São Paulo
Canada: Rogers Arena, Vancouver, British Columbia
Egypt: Sharm el-Sheikh, South Sinai Governorate, Egypt

On a more personal level, we have the list of top life events noted on Facebook:

1. Added a relationship, got engaged or got married
2. Traveled
3. Moved
4. Ended a relationship
5. First met a friend
6. Added a family member, expecting a baby or had a baby
7. Got a pet
8. Lost a loved one
9. Got a piercing

Got a piercing? How did “got a tattoo” not make the list?

Live From Your Computer! It’s YouTube Events!

Posted: 13 Dec 2013 12:11 PM PST

YouTube Live LogoYouTube has angered a lot of people lately with their forced Google+ comment update and their overly-aggressive copyright sweep. Today, they took a step toward getting back in the good graces by launching live events for (almost) every account.

Right now you’re probably saying to yourself. . . wait. . I thought YouTube already had live events. And you’d be correct-ish.

In the past, YouTube allowed favored channel owners to run live events. Many of these were tied to big concerts, video game releases and sports. You could also host a live event on Google Hangouts which would automatically show up on YouTube.

Now, it’s easier:

Now, all YouTube channels that verify their account and are in good standing will be able to live stream live video to the world. We're rolling out the feature over the next few weeks, and you can see if you have access on the YouTube account feature page or wait for Live Events to appear in your Video Manager.

I clicked through to the Live Events page and found a huge button asking if I wanted to enable Live Events. I clicked it and that that was that. I’m open to live stream. I didn’t test the tool but I poked around and it looks pretty simple. If you’re beyond simple, there are options to use your own encoding program and customizations. You can add multiple camera feeds and insert mid-roll ads to monetize your event. Nifty.

If you’re new at this, YouTube has put together a handbook that walks you through everything you need to do and think about before, during and after the broadcast. Even if you’re not going live, they provide a lot of helpful information on how to optimize your titles, tags, and thumbnails and more.

My advice; don’t shoot for the moon. Live events are an excellent way to get one-on-one with your audience. Run a live demo or a tutorial. Encourage your followers to ask questions. Be yourself and don’t even think about getting fancy. Some of my favorite live events are all about one person teaching me how to do something I didn’t know how to do.

What would you do if you were going live in five?
