| Micromax Canvas Knight A350 with 5-inch 1080p display, Octa-Core processor, 16MP camera announced in Russia Posted: 24 Jan 2014 06:00 PM PST  Micromax Canvas Turo A250 is the company's latest flagship, and the Canvas Turbo Mini A200 would launch soon. Micromax entered into the Russian market earlier this week with its Canvas line-up. It had also announced the Canvas Knight A350 in Russia, as reported by PCMag.Ru. It has a 5.0-inch (1920 x 1080 pixels) IPS display, powered by a 2 GHz octa-core processor and runs on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean). It features a 16-megapixel auto focus rear camera with LED Flash and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. The Canvas Turbo was 8.66mm thick, but this would be much thinner at 7.3mm. Looking at the images, the phone is expected to come with dual SIM support, with slots on both the sides and a non-removable back cover. It would come with 2GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. The phone would also come with Canvas Tube video app and Canvas Beat music app. A Russian forum has got hold of more press images of the phone, which shows the phone in Black and White colors. It has a 4.69-inch (1280 x 720 pixels) display, powered by a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor and runs on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean). It has a 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. It comes with dual SIM support with dual standby and packs a 1800 mAh battery. According to the official renders, it looks this would also have a metal build, similar to the Canvas Turbo. | LG G Pro 2 with 6-inch 1080p display, 3GB RAM rumored to debut at MWC 2014 Posted: 24 Jan 2014 05:53 AM PST  Rumors about the LG G3 surfaced last month, which is expected only in the second half of 2014. As the MWC nears , more rumors have started flowing in about LG's upcoming devices. The LG G Pro 2 phablet with a 6-inch full HD display is expected to be unveiled next month, according to Korea's ETNews. The LG Optimus G Pro had a Snapdragon 600 processor and 2GB of RAM, the G Pro's successor is expected to come with a Snapdragon 800 processor, similar to the LG G2 and would have 3GB of RAM to compete with the Note 3. It would run on Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box and have LTE-A support for select markets such as Korea. Other details about the smartphone such as camera, Internal storage and the battery capacity are not available yet. It should probably have a better camera, more internal storage and a larger battery, since the phone would have a large screen. It might also bring new software features for better multi-tasking, similar to the Samsung's Multi-Window. | BSNL and MTNL reportedly launching free roaming plans starting January 26th Posted: 24 Jan 2014 01:32 AM PST  BSNL, State Owned Telecom Operator and MTNL would launch new free roaming plans starting from January 26th, according to a recent report from TOI. Videocon Mobile Services was the first operator in India to offer incoming calls free while on roaming on their own network by default, without any processing fee or a special tariff voucher. It also launched new packs later that offer free incoming calls while roaming on other networks. Other operators joined in with cheaper roaming plans starting with free incoming calls while roaming. MTNL would make incoming calls free while roaming on Delhi and Mumbai circles, where it operates, and BSNL is expected to charge Re. 1 per day to avail this facility. Vodafone introduced a similar offer last year that starts at Rs. 5 per day for free incoming calls while roaming. The Cabinet had approved New Telecom Policy 2012 back in May 2012 that detailed on removing roaming charges across India under One Nation-Free Roaming. Last year TRAI said that providing free roaming is not possible since it would hit operators, so it recommended unlimited roaming through Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs) and Combo Vouchers. | Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4.2 KitKat update starts rolling out in India Posted: 23 Jan 2014 11:37 PM PST  Samsung has started rolling out the Android 4.4.4 (KitKat) update for the Galaxy Note 3 in India. The Snapdragon-variant of the Note 3 got the Android 4.4.2 update, starting from Poland last week. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 was launched in India back in September last year running on Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean). All the new Samsung Galaxy TabPRO tablet series runs on Android 4.4 out of the box. The build number is N9005XXUENA6 and the firmware build is dated Thu, 14 Jan 2014 13:52:24. Official changelog doesn't reveal any new features. The update bring minor UI changes and under the hood improvements. The CES 2014 was over a couple of weeks ago and there was no presence of the Finnish company. Nokia usually waits for the MWC to make itself known and it has sent out invites for this year's event confirming that it will be there to take wrap of a few devices. The list of rumored products include the mini version of the company's latest flagship - Lumia 1520. The compact Lumia 1520 - called as Lumia 1520v by the rumor mill will share the same beasty internals along with a 4.3inch Full HD display, 3000mAh battery and 14MP camera. The other rumored Lumia smartphones are Lumia 1820 and Lumia 1525. Among these highend devices is a rumor that many people wish to see in reality - Nokia Normandy. | Samsung reports profit of $7.73 billion in Q4 2013 with 9% decrease in mobile revenue Posted: 23 Jan 2014 10:48 PM PST  Samsung just reported its Q4 earnings for 2013, in which the company has managed to make operating profit of 8.31 trillion won ($7.73 billion) for the quarter ended December 31st. It has reported net profit of 7.30 trillion won (~US$$6.8 billion) and revenues of 59.28 trillion won, up from 59.08 trillion won in the third quarter. Mobile phone sales accounted for 32.17 trillion won, which is 9-percent down compared to the previous quarter. Operating profits in the mobile sector were 5.47 trillion won, down by 18% compared to Q3 2013. The company has reported operating profit of 36.79 trillion won for financial year of 2013, a 16.1% increase compared to 2012. We had over 30% worldwide market share in 2013, says the company, with two times more tablet sales compared to 2012, accelerated by the GALAXY Tab 3 and GALAXY Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) sales. Demand for smartphones increased QoQ in both developed and emerging markets by the year-end or holiday and the demand for tablets increased with the expansion of global promotions. Samsung blames decrease in earnings in the mobile sector QoQ due to higher marketing expenditure in the season and other expenses. | Qualcomm acquires a big patent portfolio from HP Posted: 23 Jan 2014 10:18 PM PST  In a recent move by Qualcomm to gain advantage in the smartphone market, it acquired patents of Palm Inc and iPaq smartphone among the other patents from HP. The total number of patents involved in the acquisition include 1,400 granted patents and pending patent applications from the United States and about 1,000 granted patents and pending patent applications from other countries that include China, England, Germany, Japan and South Korea. However, there was no word on the price that Qualcomm gave for the patents. Qualcomm is currently the market leader in smartphone chipset technology. The chipset company from San Diego also earns by licensing its patents and with the new acquisition from HP that comprises Palm OS patents, it hopes to extend its income. Prior to being acquired by Qualcomm, Palm Inc was acquired by HP in 2010 along with its WebOS and PalmOS technologies. However, since both of them failed to catch up with Android, HP had to sell off WebOS to LG which is currently using WebOS for its range of smart TVs. According to Qualcomm's spokesperson the acquisition of new patents will not result in increased royalty rates for existing Qualcomm licensees.  |
