| Apple reports $57.6 billion revenue, sells 51 million iPhones, 26 million iPads in Q1 2014 Posted: 27 Jan 2014 04:51 PM PST  Apple has just released its earnings report for Q1 2014 and has reported revenue worth $57.6 billion. Of this, net profit was $13.1 bilion which corresponds to a 5.7 percent growth in revenue year on year. The company has reported iPhone sales to the tune of 51 million devices sold. This mix was biased towards the iPhone 5s as was revealed in the earnings call. The underlying intent was clear that the iPhone 5c wasn't as big a success as Apple might have wished for. Today the company has revealed that SkyDrive will be called "OneDrive", and that it will start rolling out the changes gradually. Technically, the product remains the same but the name, which is usually a constant, receives a change. This is not the first time Microsoft has been forced to rename its products, as we had witnessed earlier how the company was forced not to use "metro" for its whole design language it developed. The company behind the series, Rockstar games, started releasing, or letting others port its games over to mobile platforms like iOS and Android. GTA III and Vice City released on both the platforms while availability still evaded the third ecosystem - Windows Phone. But when the company announced San Andreas for mobile, Windows Phone was surprisingly in the mix of platforms supported. | Ericsson and Samsung settle patent related legal disputes with license agreement Posted: 27 Jan 2014 01:20 AM PST  Earlier today Samsung announced that they have signed a deal with Google for sharing their license for 10 years. Now Samsung and Ericsson have entered into a license agreement to settle all ongoing patent related legal disputes. This agreement covers patents relating to GSM, UMTS, and LTE standards for both networks and handsets. This illustrates Ericsson's commitment to fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) principles, says the company. Back in November 2012, Ericsson filed a patent lawsuit against Samsung at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, against continuing to use its technology without paying licensing fees. It demanded billions more than the previous license agreements, said Samsung. The new agreement includes an initial payment and ongoing royalty payments from Samsung to Ericsson for the term of the new multi-year license agreement. This will impact Ericsson sales and net income in Q4 2013 sales by 4.2 billion Swedish Krona ($650 million) and its net income by 3.3 billion Swedish Krona ($500 million). The details of the agreement are confidential and will not be disclosed, said the company. But this indicates that Ericsson would earn billions of dollars over the years. | Samsung, Google sign a 10-year patent agreement Posted: 27 Jan 2014 12:28 AM PST  Samsung and Google has signed a 10 year global patent cross-license agreement that would cover technologies and business areas. This will strengthen their patent position against patent infringement against other, especially Apple. Back in 2012, Samsung paid $1.05 billion to Apple in damages for infringing several patents owned by Apple. Google acquired Motorola Mobility in 2012, in which it acquired over 17000 patents owned by the company. The new deal with Samsung would let them access to these patent portfolios. This collaboration would improve the research and development of current and future products and technologies of both these companies. Google already has patent agreements with Microsoft, Nokia and Intellectual Ventures. Regarding the deal, Allen Lo, Deputy General Counsel for Patents at Google, said, We're pleased to enter into a cross-license with our partner Samsung. By working together on agreements like this, companies can reduce the potential for litigation and focus instead on innovation. Dr. Seungho Ahn, the Head of Samsung's Intellectual Property Center, said This agreement with Google is highly significant for the technology industry. It has been a grand revival of sorts for the company which has seen great releases last year in the LG G2 and the Google Nexus 5. Incidentally, LG confirms that these exact two devices have contributed massively to the improvements in its mobile revenue over the quarter as well as over the year. The numbers for QoQ increase in revenues are 18% - 3.38 bn USD, while yoy numbers are more encouraging at 29% - 11.85 billion USD. LG has quickly become one of the more interesting Android OEMs in the recent times and the numbers clearly reflect that. The LG Mobile Communications Company reported a 29 percent increase in annual revenues to KRW 12.97 trillion (USD 11.85 billion) year-on-year and an 18 percent increase in fourth-quarter revenues to 3.59 trillion (USD 3.38 billion) quarter-on-quarter with help from stronger LTE smartphone sales such as G2 and Nexus 5. | Lenovo K7T Kingdom with 2K display, 3GB RAM and Snapdragon 800 shows up in Benchmarks Posted: 26 Jan 2014 11:39 PM PST  Lenovo K7T (Kingdom) has surfaced in AnTuTu Benchmarks in China. After the Lenovo Vibe X and the Vibe Z smartphones with full HD display, the K7T would be the first smartphone from the company to sport a a 2K display with a resolution of 2560x1400 pixels. According to the leaked benchmark screenshot, it would come with 3GB RAM and a 2.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with Adreno 330 GPU. It is expected to run on Android 4.4.1 (KitKat). It would have a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, similar to the Vibe X and the Vibe Z. It would come with 16GB of internal storage. It would probably come with an expansion slot too. Details about the screen size and the battery capacity is not available yet.
