Facebook to acquire WhatsApp for $16 billion

In a surprising move, Facebook has announced that it would acquire WhatsApp for $16 billion, including $4 billion in cash and about $12 billion Facebook shares. Facebook will pay an additional $3 billion worth of stock units to WhatsApp employees, that is likely to be paid over the years. WhatsApp has 450 million monthly active users worldwide and over 320 million daily active users. It is currently adding more than 1 million new registered users per day. Even after the deal nothing would change. WhatsApp's brand will be maintained, including the headquarters. CEO Jan Koum will join Facebook's Board of Directors and they will acquire the entire WhatsApp team, said Facebook. On Facebook, CEO, Mark Zuckerberg said, I'm excited to announce that we've agreed to acquire WhatsApp and that their entire team will be joining us at Facebook. WhatsApp will continue to operate independently within Facebook. The product roadmap will remain unchanged and the team is going to stay in Mountain View. Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 3 Neo in India at a price tag of Rs. 40900, at the Samsung Forum Asia 2014 in Bali yesterday. We got to check out the device at the event. The Note 3 Neo looks exactly like the Note 3 and comes with all the S Pen features such as Action Memo, Scrapbook, Write Screen, Finder, Pen Window and also has all the Samsung-specific software features. We all know that HTC is going to announce its next flagship, the HTC One successor at an event on March 25(almost a month after the MWC 2014) and by now, almost the core specifications of the device have leaked. There were leaked pictures of the smartphone and all leaks have pointed to a build quality and design language quite similar to the original HTC One. Today, popular twitter account @evleaks has tweeted the press render of the All New HTC One, 2014. @Evleaks is usually spot on with leaks and we have no reason to doubt this leak and we believe this will be the HTC One successor. HTC had announced a literal gold version of the HTC One sometime in 2013, but they are taking a more practical approach this time with a gold colored variant that people can buy. Gionee has just announced the Elife S5.5, the company's thinnest smartphone at an event in China. It is said to be the world's thinnest phone that has 5.5mm thin magnesium alloy frame. It has a 5-inch (1920 x 1080 pixels) Full HD Super AMOLED touch screen display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The display module is just 0.55mm thick and the back cover is 0.40mm thick, that is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, making the phone very slim. Micromax unveiled the Canvas Knight A350 at an event in Russia last month. The company has announced that the smartphone would hit the Indian market soon and has also released a teaser video. The Canvas Knight has a 5.0-inch (1920 x 1080 pixels) IPS display, powered by a 2 GHz octa-core processor and runs on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean). It features a 16-megapixel auto focus rear camera with LED Flash and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. LG has finally made the G2 Mini official ahead of Mobile World Congress 2014. It has a 4.7-inch (960 x 540 pixels) capacitive touch screen display, powered by a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor (Snapdragon 400 or Nvidia Tegra 4i options), and runs on Android 4.4 (KitKat). It has a 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. You have rear mounted power and volume keys. Unlike the G2, the G2 Mini has matte back. LG brings all the G2 features such as Guest Mode, Knock ON, Quick Memo, Clip Tray, Quick Window and lots more features to the G2 Mini. Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Note 3 in 3 new accents - Rose Gold White, Rose Gold Black and Merlot Red back in December. At the Samsung Asia Forum 2014 in Bali, we got to check out the Rose Gold Black Edition of the Note 3. It has soft leather-like back cover similar to the original Note 3 and also comes with a S Pen stylus in matching color. Airtel reaches 200 million mobile customers in India

Airtel has announced that it has crossed  200 million mobile subscriber mark in India. It is the largest mobile operator in India and fourth largest mobile operator in the world in terms of subscribers. It has 1.5 million outlets and serves 86.7% of the country's population. It crossed 60 million mobile customer mark in 2008 and reached 100 mobile subscriber base in India in 2009. It took just 5 years for Airtel to add 100 million customers. Commenting on the new milestone, Gopal Vittal, Joint MD& CEO (India), Bharti Airtel said, We are delighted to have reached this major milestone. It is gratifying to see the trust our customers have reposed in our brand and it will be our endeavor to continue delighting them with innovative and world-class services. We will also continue to invest towards building a robust data network of the future and be at the forefront of India's mobile broadband revolution. Airtel offers 2G, 3G and 4G TD-LTE services in India and plans to offer 4G FD-LTE in the country since it won 1800 MHz spectrum in 15 circles in the recent spectrum auction. Nokia MWC 2014 teaser hints at Nokia X Android smartphone

Nokia has finally unveiled their plans for the MWC 2014 next week. It sent out Invites for the event last week. Now the company has posted a large image in green color that indicates the letter X. We already know that Nokia is planning to release the Nokia X phone at the MWC. It was previously called Project Normady. Evleaks already revealed a range of press shots. It recently posted an image of the phone in green color, that matches the teaser. It also revealed the complete specifications of the phone. It would run on forked version of Android (version unknown) and supports Android apps through Nokia app store and other third-party app stores. Microsoft was involved in a Trademark fight over the name "SkyDrive" and it lost. So, they had to rebrand it and from now on, Microsoft's SkyDrive will be called as "Microsoft OneDrive". Microsoft's OneDrive is one among the many cloud storage options offered by big companies of the Internet - Google offers Google Drive, Dropbox, Box and many others. One of the nicest things about Microsoft OneDrive is that it comes with 7GB of free storage for starters(Google Drive offers 5GB while Dropbox offers 2GB). Another thing that is cool about Microsoft OneDrive is that it offers a very good sync experience along with Microsoft Office, so it would be great for enterprise consumers. Among the many similarities that it shares with the other cloud storage providers, it offers official apps for smartphone platforms - Android, iOS, Windows Phone which can be used to access your data. HTC schedules events in the US and UK on March 25th, HTC One successor expected

HTC has announced two separate events on March 25th, 2014 in the U.S. and UK. The invites doesn't reveal anything, but the company is likely to unveil the most expected HTC One successor. Most of the specifications of the smartphone had been leaked already. We had also seen some press shots and live images of the upcoming flagship HTC smartphone that reveals dual cameras on the back and on-screen buttons, replacing the hardware touch buttons. In a new leak, Evleaks has posted a new press image of the phone inside a case. This render shows on-screen buttons and dual front speakers. It has also hinted that the phone would be called "The All New One" and come in Gray, Silver, and Gold colors. HTC One family is a series of three similar looking smartphones that come at different sizes, different specifications and definitely different price points. HTC One, the company's current flagship, was launched more than a year ago and is still the company's flagship. In the interim, HTC has managed to push two HTC One lookalike devices in the form of HTC One Mini and HTC One Max. All the three devices share the same design language and build quality. BBM for Android now compatible with Gingerbread(Android 2.3) devices

When BlackBerry announced that it is making its popular messaging service, BBM, into a cross platform service, the entire tech industry erupted in euphoria. And when BlackBerry finally released their BBM Chat for Android, there was so much rush that a lot of people had to wait to try out BBM and that indicated a clear interest of the crowd in BBM. However, from the time of release until now, BBM for Android has been available only on Android 4.0+ devices and with Android Gingerbread 2.3 still accounting for 20% of Android users, a lot of people were left without access to BBM. BlackBeery had stated that they were working hard to bring BBM for Gingerbread users and they have lived up to their word. Some of the features that the users of Android 2.3 Gingerbread will not be able to use includes - BBM's Voice Call, Live location tracking on Map and BBM Channels. There is no word on whether these features will be addressed in the coming version or not, but we sure do hope they will instate the features. Samsung confirms Android 4.4.2 KitKat update for 14 Galaxy devices for US

Samsung has finally announced the list of devices that would receive the Android 4.4 (KitKat) update, but this list is only for the U.S. variants. Samsung started rolling out the KitKat update for the Galaxy Note 3 last month. The Indian Exynos variant of the Note 3 got the KitKat update by the end of January. It is yet to roll out the KitKat update for other devices. The Android 4.4.2 (KitKat) software update would bring easy-to-use features that enhance the user experience, including a more intuitive user interface, enhanced messaging capabilities and updated applications, said Samsung. The update would also bring. Location Menu: An integrated location menu enables users to easily activate GPS, Wi-Fi and mobile networks, while simultaneously checking the battery usage of apps running location service capabilities. The G Pad was originally launched as a premium 8 inch tablet from LG, fully packed with special features added through software but the one we have here is the first tablet to be blessed by Google with a Play Edition, meaning the device will run stock Android without any modifications.
