Unknown SM-G900F is not the Samsung Galaxy S5, Here’s Why

Posted: 09 Dec 2013 06:12 AM PST

Not even 8 months have passed since the Samsung Galaxy S4's launch but we are already seeing rumours and leaks of Samsung Galaxy S5 aplenty. Sure, Samsung's flagship usually gets this attention every year, but we feel it is too soon this time. Amongst the various "leaks" floating around in the internet is one peculiar benchmark result from Browsermark. We may be wrong, but we have solid reasons why this is not the Samsung Galaxy S5. Firstly, lets see what this is all about. Apparently, an unknown device codenamed SM-G900F has appeared at the no. 3 position in Browsermark results page for Top 5 Web Phones, which some think, is the upcoming Galaxy S5. Is it? We think not, and here's our counter argument. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 is right above the SM-G900F's score, which means that this new device might have the same processor inside. Secondly, if this is going to be a Galaxy S5, this sure damn well will be more powerful than the Note 3, as we have seen with all the Galaxy S releases after the Note ones. So, running on the same browser, if the Note 3 powered by ...

Google’s Great Online Shopping Festival #GOSF is back, great deals from December 11th to 13th

Posted: 09 Dec 2013 02:54 AM PST

Great Online Shopping Festival, aka GOSF, by Google was an initiative by the Mountain View company to bring a "Cyber Monday" like deals bonanza to India last year, and it is back again this year, with more partners and of course, more deals. Unlike Black Friday, Cyber Monday and GOSF are online-only, and Google aims to attract the eager buyers of the legion of Indian internet shoppers, with deals on a single platform. That single platform is the website - GOSF.in, which lists all the partners and even has a countdown for the first day of the shopping festival, which begins on December 11th and ends on the 13th. 3 days, over 200 partners including all major e-tailers, and hopefully insane deals. Will this year be defining for the Indian e-commerce industry? For a perspective of the Indian internet population - there are about 200 million users in the country, 10% of them being online shoppers. This is expected to grow to 50 million in the coming years, but in order to raise awareness of online shopping, shopping festivals like GOSF do help. According to Google, GOSF last year saw over 350% growth for participating retailers, with 50% of them being ...

Motorola releases open source kernel files for the Moto G

Posted: 08 Dec 2013 11:21 PM PST

Motorola released the Moto G, the company's latest budget phone last month, that would launch in India in January 2014. The company has released the Android 4.3 kernel files for the Moto G. We have already seen companies releasing kernel sources for their high-end device, but Motorola has released the open source kernel files for their budget smartphone. Even though the source code is not useful for normal users, it would be helpful for Android developers and tinkerers worldwide who would like to create custom software builds. Even though the OS is pretty much stock Android, the Moto G is not likely to get the Android experience launcher in the Android 4.4 update, since the Moto X did not get the feature in the latest KitKat update. Since the Kernel source for the phone is out now, we might get new custom ROMs for the phone soon, bringing new features. You can download the kernel source code for the Moto G over at SourceForge.

Understanding the technology behind the MediaTek MT6592 True OctaCore Processor

Posted: 08 Dec 2013 11:15 PM PST

As our phones become smarter and applications enable us to do more, the onus lies on the hardware to be able to keep up with our demands. Its a constant struggle to strike the right balance between power, battery consumption and the all important price point to create an end product that satisfies consumer requirements while also falling within the earlier mentioned criteria. While the likes of Qualcomm are focussing on making 'faster and better' cores, both Samsung and MediaTek are experimenting on increasing the number of cores themselves. We recently got to spend some time with Dr. Finnbarr from Mediatek and talk about what the MT6592 chipset brings to the table. There's been a lot of hype around Samsung's octa core chipset for smartphones and now that MediaTek is trying to level the playing field by bringing their own solution into the mix, we thought it best to take a look at what sets the MediaTek 6592 apart from the competition. Before getting into the game of cores itself, its important to know the difference in the architectures being used. ARM's Cortex A series of processors can be classified in three tiers based on performance. When we're talking about 32 bit processors, ...
