BlackBerry partners with Foxconn to produce affordable BlackBerry 10 devices Posted: 21 Dec 2013 03:43 AM PST As sales plunge, BlackBerry has announced a new partnership with Foxconn to produce BlackBerry 10 devices. The five year partnership aims to launch the first device by March or April. The BlackBerry 10 based device will be introduced first in Indonesia. The company has also earmarked six or seven additional markets for the device. The device will be 3G enabled and should make its way to India as well given that the subcontinent remains a fairly major market for BlackBerry products. Shifting to Foxconn will allow BlackBerry to cutdown investments while possibly producing better hardware. All intellectual property will be owned by BlackBerry. Foxconn's responsibilities will be limited to manufacturing and working on the hardware of the devices. The cost of manufacturing will be paid to Foxconn directly by BlackBerry once production starts and costs are finalized. A clause is in place which says that Foxconn will take a portion of revenues once they exceed a certain amount. Commenting on the deal, BlackBerry CEO John Chen had this to say, "For the foreseeable future, in North America, our designers will focus on enterprise handsets only…Most of all I'm ... |
Windows Phone users to get 20 GB of free SkyDrive storage for an year thanks to Microsoft Posted: 21 Dec 2013 01:47 AM PST Windows Phone users have something to be extra happy about this Christmas. Microsoft is spreading around some festive cheer in the form of 20GB of free SkyDrive storage. Microsoft says that the free storage is valid for 1 year after which we presume you'll have to pay for it. All Windows Phone users can claim their free storage till the end of January via the link that is being mailed to your primary ID attached to the phone. SkyDrive is an integral part of the extended Windows ecosystem and 20GB of free storage is nothing to sneeze at. Microsoft already gives 200GB of free storage for two years to users of the Surface 2 or Surface Pro 2 tablets. Including Windows Phone users into the mix is a good way to drive adoption for their cloud storage service. SkyDrive is also the backend for synchronizing settings across Windows devices and works surprisingly well. SkyDrive clients exist for Android, iOS and of course Windows Phone. The service can also be used on Windows PCs as well as the Mac. [Via - The Verge] |
