Yahoo’s beautiful News Digest app for iOS is Summly, enhanced! Posted: 07 Jan 2014 03:11 PM PST Yahoo's mission for today's CES 2014 keynote was literally this - simplifying daily habits. One of them, according to Marissa Mayer, CEO, was daily news and the way we consume it. It's a total information overload, with multiple news sources reporting the same news, according to Yahoo, so to fix that, they have announced a new app for the iPhone, called the Yahoo News Digest. This is basically the result of the Summly acquisition that happened during March last year, because the resulting app is striking and beautiful, very much like Summly, the very unique news summarizing app that was. Nick, Summly's founder who got acquired by Yahoo in the process, demoed the new app, based on the same principles of news collection and short summaries that made Summly popular, but this takes that concept further. httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_w4oh9t1gmU The Yahoo News Digest app is delightfully designed with great looking design and surprisingly fluid animation, partly thanks to the iOS 7 framework. Beyond the looks lies the function, which is, creating summaries of the most important news stories twice a day. These news bits will carry "Atoms" from multiple sources, which are intelligently gathered through a unique algorithm. Detailing on the "Atoms" - Our Atoms ...
Yahoo acquires Aviate launcher, talks up contextual search Posted: 07 Jan 2014 02:37 PM PST Marissa Mayer just concluded Yahoo's CES keynote today and one of the main takeaways from it was how the company is looking to change search, especially on mobile. Google Now has been at the forefront of contextual search on Android and iOS and Yahoo wants to tackle exactly that. How? It just announced the acquisition of the intelligent Android launcher - Aviate. The launcher, which was doing the rounds in beta, is currently a invite-only homescreen replacement that automatically configures your home screen based on contexts like time, usage, preferences and place. It was touted as the "Google Now" of launchers, so it is easy to see why Yahoo lapped it up. To quickly summarize the launcher, here are its features and how it works, listed on the Play Store - KEY FEATURES: ★ Navigation simplified — transforms your phone into three, easy-to-navigate screens ★ Clean design — streamlines your phone to make it feel faster and more efficient than ever ★ Personalization — auto-adapts your homescreen to your lifestyle, current context, and interests ★ Collections — auto-categorize your apps so you don't have to HOW AVIATE WORKS: Based on a complex understanding of your context and preferences, Aviate works to deliver you only the best apps and ...
Windows Phone outshipped iPhone in 24 emerging markets, according to Microsoft Posted: 07 Jan 2014 12:28 PM PST We've been hearing how the Nokia Lumia 520 has been the best selling Windows Phone of all time, but if Microsoft's recent words are to be believed, Windows Phone, as a platform, is now outshipping iPhone in 24 markets. Before you jump to conclusions, the iPhone is not doomed, because it's the emerging markets where the 3rd ecosystem is cementing its place, most likely behind Android in the first place. This is a decent achievement for the platform, but tells us more about Nokia rather than Windows Phone, because these markets are clearly influenced by their legacy supply chain, and hence the obvious sales. Microsoft recently floated this fact with TechRadar claiming that it is the fastest growing mobile platform right now. According to previous IDC reports, it is indeed true. Windows Phone is outpacing the mobile phone market right now, and if it stays that way, it will soon reach a respectable market share, but as of now, it stays at 3.6% of the global market. Here is the list of countries in which Windows Phone is outshipping the iPhone - Chile, Colombia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Ecuador, Finland, Greece, Hungary, India, Italy, Kenya, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, ...

With the Space Pack, Mophie is bringing its next round of innovation for iPhones. The case not only has a battery pack but also manages to expand storage on your iPhone 5 or 5s. The battery is rated for 1,700 mAh which should more than double your iPhone's battery life. Storage comes in both 16 and 32GB variants that may as much as double or triple built in storage depending on the configuration you have. Users are free to place any file type on the extended storage and can access it via an iOS app called Space. The application will sort stored files into Collections so that you can see what is stored in the Space Pack. We think that the Mophie Space Pack is an interesting solution to your storage woes if you've ended up getting a model that's just a bit short on storage than what you really need. The Mophie Space Pack starts shipping on 14th March at a price point of $149.95 for the 16GB version, $179.95 for the 32GB version. |
Pete Lau’s OnePlus and Cyanogen will partner to create the OnePlus One Posted: 07 Jan 2014 11:21 AM PST Pete Lau, the distinguished engineer from Oppo, had announced earlier that he left the company to pursue something new. It was known that it involved CyanogenMod and its CTO Steve Kondik, but now we know what exactly they are upto. Pete Lau is now the CEO of a new hardware start up called OnePlus, and unsurprisingly, its software partner will be Cyanogen Inc. which will power its phones, starting with the flagship "OnePlus One". No, we are not making that up. Oppo was the first company in the world to partner with Cyanogen Inc for bundling, as well as creating, the first CM based phones through the N1. While it was good enough for starters, we guess Cyanogen wanted exclusive hardware, and it is not hard to deduce what happened later. Here we are now, with a new start up called OnePlus making phones with Cyanogen as the base OS. Speaking on this newly formed alliance - "What's coming is one of the most popular mobile operating systems specifically developed for the best hardware, with a unique twist," said Lau. "The smartphone industry is ripe for disruption, and 2014 should prove to be a huge year for the future of the market." "Upon hearing ...
